PAOC Missions Hotline – Weeks of November 09 & 16, 2008

THIS SUNDAY, JOIN OTHERS GLOBALLY TO PRAY FOR THE PERSECUTED CHURCH

Sunday, November 9, 2008, churches across Canada will join together for the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP)

Christians remain the most persecuted religious group in the world today. According to the World Evangelical Alliance, more than 200 million Christians in more than 60 countries face brutal opposition and persecution because of their beliefs.

While we remain largely free to practice and profess our faith here in Canada, the lives of many Christians around the world are in danger. Their daily suffering goes largely unnoticed. Rarely do national newspaper headlines OR prime time television interviews reflect the full reality of the injustices perpetrated upon those that name Jesus as their Lord.

But they are not forgotten. Every year in November, Canadian Christians join with churches from more than 130 countries to stand with these persecuted believers in prayer during the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP). Often called the world’s largest prayer group, IDOP is the biggest one-day prayer event in the world, and its focus is on remembering those Christians that are suffering on account of their faith.
This year in Canada, IDOP will be held on Sunday, November 9th.

This year’s theme is ‘Praying for the Persecutors’, taken from Romans 12:9-21. Although our first reaction to persecution reports may often be one of revenge, God has instructed us to pray for and bless those who persecute us.

This year, churches across Canada will be praying specifically for Christians who suffer from persecution in North Korea, the Maldives, Eritrea and India. Government leadership in each of these countries has made it extremely difficult for Christians to live out their faith in Jesus. Christians in these countries face discrimination, intimidation, attacks, fines, imprisonment and torture by the hands of government authorities. The IDOP Canada partners have developed helpful resources to assist churches and other groups in praying effectively for these focus countries. To order your free copy of useful resources, go to www.idop.ca.

What is IDOP Canada?

The International Day Of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP) is an annual event in churches around the world. IDOP Canada is a partnership formed in 1997 to encourage churches to observe the day of prayer. IDOP Canada partners work together to produce resources for the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church for churches in Canada. The IDOP Canada partners include The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada’s (EFC) Religious Liberty Commission, Open Doors with Brother Andrew (Canada), The Voice of the Martyrs (Canada), and Intercede International.
